CLARK/GARWOOD, NJ — Garwood resident Peter Feldon, a stage 4 cancer fighter, received a true Christmas miracle when Good Tidings Plumbing Heating and Cooling fixed his furnace for free after it broke down during the snowstorm last week.
“It was absolutely amazing,” said Feldon’s fiance Melissa Berry Burger. “Oh my God, we are so incredibly grateful and thankful.”
Burger took to social media to publicly thank the Clark-based company at 1225 Westfield Ave. for their goodwill.
“What an absolute blessing they bestowed on the family. God bless them,” said Burger.
The heartwarming story began on Dec. 17, the morning after the storm, when Feldon’s sister called Good Tidings saying it was an emergency due to Feldon’s medical condition.
Someone came out right away. Upon learning Feldon had stage 4 cancer, David McKenna, the owner of Good Tidings, told his employee not to charge for the work.
The bill came to roughly $1,700 but the final amount was deducted with a note saying “Merry Christmas from Good Tidings.”
McKenna, a Christian who got his faith about 10 years ago, said that is just how he rolls.
“This is one of life’s greatest opportunities to be used,” said McKenna. “That is why I named my company Good Tidings. It is part of my faith. … God gives us opportunities to work through him.”
McKenna has owned the company, formally called American Specialty Plumbing Heating Cooling, for the past 30 years. It wasn’t until he was away on a sales training trip when he decided not to go grab a beer at the bar with friends and instead read his new bible.
“I had an experience where God changed me and my name to Good Tidings,” said McKenna.
After changing the company name he held a meeting to let his employees know that if they ever encounter someone who needs help to help them.
“If someone needs the money more than we do, we do it for free,” said McKenna. “Especially around the holidays.”
This isn’t McKenna’s first goodwill as he recalled helping several people in the past which he stresses is not for financial gain, but to truly help someone. The testimonials can be read at facebook.com/GoodTidingsComfort.
